Feb. 24 Stepping out of my usual bubble

I sat out on a sunny park bench this afternoon in the Parc de Choisy, watching my growing grandsons horsing around in the mid-distance. The close-up view was of these stunning little girls, burying their consenting friend in the sand. They allowed me to take a picture, and when I asked, gladly produced an email address to which I could send a copy! (Oh modern times!….)

Here is Halima’s response on receiving it:

mercie for sending pictures of mermaid I Thank You sign the girl who was at Choisy Park likes to kiss to all your family good nightor good day

I am so touched by this interaction, and so surprised at my usually reticent self, that I name this photo honorary Drawing of the Day!

Feb. 21 Nearly weaving in spite of myself

Once a weaver always a weaver, with or without the warps and wefts…(I can’t resist that penmanship!)

I like the 3D effect, though it does NOT photograph well with a scanner (which allows for no depth of field), so back to iPhone snapshots for this one.

Another one that evolved on its own without any decisive shove from me, and which remains “senza titolo”. It has an encaustic painting sort of surface, which interests me, having gone to an inconclusive (for me) encaustic workshop in November. Maybe I should have another look at wax!

Feb. 18 That beautiful old-fashioned penmanship

I didn’t feel the added detail of warp and weft was even necessary, given the elegance of this handwritten document. Just glue, and two sizes of strips (imagine being a two-shredder family!)

And what do you know, I had an 1898 issue of “Lecture pour Tous” from a French street sale, featuring fashion from the previous generation. That makes the hairstyles on these tiny heads exactly contemporary with the document, a last will and testament written in 1874!

I have a new shredder! I have a stack of handwritten documents in 19th century penmanship…it looks as if weaving is back for a while.

Feb. 16: The art of getting lost

Maps befuddle me!  I really like the way they look, but I can’t equate their information with what I am supposed to do about it. Now that I have GPS to lead me home, I  can just feed our maps to the shredder, and redesign the countryside as I see fit!

Not Valentines, but more carciofi, at least as a starting point… It is fine with me when these things take off in their own direction, supporting the Improv saying that “there is always something in the box”! (Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up)  Dare we believe it?

Another monoprint base, with lattice strips and looser strokes glued in successive layers…
